HELP FOR THE SICK.

A striking example of what can be done by patience and economy was the exhibition at Smith and Caughey's yesterday afternoon by the sewing circle of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary, garments totalling about 300 for one month's sewing alone being on view. Taking a selection of ordinary garments, such as old blankets, coats, jumpers, skirts, which unthinking people would usually throw out or burn, the workers showed how they can be utilised after cleaning into a variety of useful articles for the household, besides being turned into some astonishing small garments for children. Take, for example, old stockings. These can be made into quite handsome mats by the use of a machine that was on exhibition, showing how to cut the article for use preparatory to designing an attractive pattern on canvas. Another use for stockings was that of a mop, made by strips of stockings, fastened on to a cloth and attached to a billy, lid. Pillow-slips made from flower sacks and remnants of unbleached calico were also much in evidence, and mattresses, stuffed with a variety of odds and ends, and well finished, were also shown. These gifts are bestowed on deserving families in Auckland by the Hospital Auxiliary, and an appeal is made to all interested to give old clothes to carry on tho good work, particularly men's suits. The energetic convener of the sewing circle is Mrs. Carr-Smith, and meetings are held every week.
