SCHOOL ATHLETICS.

TAKAPUNA GRAMiMAR SPORTS. E. STEPHENSON IS CHAMPION. F. BRINSDEN TWO RECORDS. The terraces at Takapuna Grammar School were packed yesterday for the annual athletic sports meeting, and spectators were rewarded with many exciting performances, both in the individual and combined events. Never was the value of the "house" system in developing a proper sporting instinct in a big educational institution better exemplified than in the relays and the spectacular novelty races—girls' sixlegged and chariot sprints. Cheer alter clieer went up as tlie teams were marshalled, and until the tape was broken there was continuous and tumultuous applause, as students barracked for their representatives. Big "Bill" Massey (heavyweight boxer) kept the interests up with good-natured megaphoning as announcer in the afternoon, and when at last his own "house" (Tokomaru) was victorious in a relay, he let everybody know he was the happiest lad on the ground. The results and recording systems were a masterpiece of organisation, and nothing approaching it in the way of efficiency has been seen at any athletic carnival this summer. Ron Stacey, the 'Varsity and Auckland representative Rugby forward had charge of this department and its excellent working may perhaps have been due to his judgment in selecting three clever girls as his assistants. Another "star" of the Rugger neld in Keith Anderson did a great day e work as boys' secretary, while etill another footballer in Vic Butler (an All Black full-back) created a fine impression with the North Shore folk, having recentlybeen transferred from Mount Albert Grammar School. Other hard-worked officiala were: President, Mr. O. M. Littlejohn; judges, Professor J. A. Bartrum, Messrs. R. Broughton, A. 1. Davies, J B Goldsworthy, C. C. Robinson, R. Smallfield, J. W. Williamson; timekeepers, Messrs. J. Rees-Georgc W. H. Thomson, J. Thompson, F. W. Warren; referee, Mr. H. W. Short; starter, Mr. \. G. Coulam; marksman, Mr. G. A. Ball; track stewards, Mr. I. S. McHarg and prefects; megaphonist, Harry Adams; handicappere, Ronald Cooper, Mark Drower, Trevor Johnston; girls secretary, Miss O. L. G. Adams, to whom a special word of praise is undoubtedly due for the artistic manner in which the "charioteers were turned out for their very pretty parade and thrilling race. . The senior swimming champions, .Noel Crump and Edna Rainey, competed in a comprehensive programme, and did well, although not quite so expert on land as in the water. The former, in particular, performed splendidly, when it is remembered that he swam against New South Wales on Tuesday, and did a tew hours training on Wednesday night. Sis records were lowered in the boys events. In the 440 yds senior championship E Stepheneon lowered the record, establUhed by P. J. McNeil in 1032 by 3s the former's time being 56 1-sb. D. Loehore recorded 57 2-Se in the 440 yds open event In the intermediate section M. Drowei covered a distance, of 18ft 9.1 m in the Ions: jump. F. Brmeden established a unfor record for the 220 yds event, his time bein- 27 2-ss, as well as reducing the under" 14% years' lOOyde event to 11 4-5 a A small boys' record was made by E. Tremain. who covered 100 yds in 12s 'Trevor Johnston s time ol j.U J.-J for'the mile was announced as a record, but this was not so, aa lie clocked j.7 when he won the same event in 19J-.
