SWIMMING.
E. V. CTTNNOIiD BEST TIME. H. BRIGGS WINS MOLLOY SHIELD. H. Briggs. of Otorohanga, won the harbour race of two miles, decided for the Molloy Shield by the Ponsonby Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club on Saturday afternoon. The course was mapped out in the boat harbour at Ponsonbv, the start and finish being at points o'ff the Shelly Beach Bnths. The sea was calm, but during the race the tide was running out, and for about half the distance the competitors had to swim against the current. The race was a sealed handicap, and the 19 competitors all started together. Fifteen, •"eluding two ladies, completed the distance. The scratch swimmer, E. V. Cunnold (an ex-N.Z. champion swimmer) soon took the lead, which he held throughout to finish first. He registered the fastest time, 53 minutes. Mr. Trevor McCarthy, chairman of the Ponsonby swimming executive (and treasurer of the centre), formally presented the Molloy Shield to Briggs and congratulated him on his success. Mr. McCarthy also said that the club will present to Cunnold a cup for his performance in gaining the fastest time. Results are as follow :— Harbour Race, Two Miles—A. Briggs (Otorohanga), 6ra, 1, time, 51.46; S. Jack (Grammar), 4.45, 2, time, 52.13: R. Webb (North Shore), om.. 3, time, 52.14. Open Handicap, 52 yards.—Tom Stotter, 2s, 1; C. Bunting, 3s, 2; H. Neale, 3s, 3. A close finish. Time, 32 3-5. DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP. W. HASSAN REGAINS TITLE. The final section of the Auckland men's diving championship was held from the high board at the Mount Eden baths during the week-end. The low board section took place at the championship carnival earlier in the week. Only two competitors, Wilfrid Hassan (who is a N.Z. Rugby League rep. player and has been provincial diving champion on two previous occasions, 1929 and 1930) and Harold Neale, performed the dives from the high board, a fairly high standard being maintained. Hassan, with 113 points, was adjudged the winner, Neale scoring 103 points. NOEL RYAN IS DEFEATED. PERTH, February 5. The following swimming championships of Australia were decided at Perth yesterday :— 220 Yards.—Godfrey Vockler (Victoria) 1, Noel Ryan (New South Wales) 2. Won by a yard. Time, 2.21 3-5. Ladies' Half-mile.—Edna Davey (New South Wales) 1. Time, 12.12 4-5. Won easily.
