GIRL ATHLETES.

COLOURFUL SPORTS. CRESS, DRIIX AND DISCIFUNE PAGEANT AT BLANDFORD PARK. Three cheers for Auckand's athletic girls. They marched well, they ran ■well, and they looked -well at Blandford Park on 'Saturday. They demonstrated to an appreciative attendance of about 3000 people their wonderful athletic ability, and roused the spectators to a high pitch of enthusiasm. Everything went with a swing, as the A.G.A.A. girls had carefully rehearsed their programme, which proved both colourful find exciting. The costuming of the competitors made a riot of gay colours. The scene was kaleidoscopic with masses of rythmical marching and team games, where the proficiency of the girls to take a pass with the ball wuuld put the average Kugby footballer to shame.

The fluctuating fortunes of the competitors, particularly in team events, was followed with vociferous cheering and characteristic screeching, and for the winner or winners there was always an ovation. One of the most spectacular events of the clay was the chariot race. Each team had five "horses" and the driver in most Instances wore a coloured mantle. As they galloped around the arena there was cheering from sheer enthusiasm. Red. green and orange were conspicuous in the bright sunshine. Tt was a picture long to be remembered. The human maypole was another outstanding event, while the display of physical, drill proved the ability of the girls to vie with the youths for honours in this disciplinary department. The marching was splendid and roused tumultuous applause.

The programme Included many novel features ; not the least interesting was the huiifan obstacle race, named by some of the spectators as the "under-aud-over," because the girls had to jump over human bodies and crawl under their legs. The cart-wheel race was outstanding aud caused mu eh merriment.

The running of the meeting deserves special mention. The events were got off expedltlously and the results were announced without delay. The organisation, indeed, was perfect, and a great deal of the success of the gathering was due to the unremitting work of the secretary of the association. Miss Vera Hay.

The director of physical training was Mr. ,T. F. Rogers, and Miss M. Searle was director of games. The combined teams gave a fine display in the early part of the afternoon in figure marching, followed by a polonaise, and later by an assembly of teams in a combined march and physical drill exhibition.
