SHAW AGAIN.

OPEN GOLF CHAMPION. ARTHUR DUNCAN RUNNER-UP. CYCLONIC FINISH BY MOSS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sunday. The New Zealand open golf championship was decided at Herefaunga yesterday, A. J. Shaw being successful for the fourth year in succession. A. D. S. Duncan was runner-up, while E. S. Douglas filled third position. Play opened in fine weather, but heavy rain fell later in the day. Shaw was lucky in being out early in the afternoon, rain holding off until he had leached the 16th green, when it commenced to fall heavily. Shaw made the most of his opportunity. He was out in 33, which was great golf, his figures reading: 4, 3, 2, 5, 3, 4, 4, 5, 3. For a time it looked certain he would break 70, but the rain unsettled him and he failed with putts on the last two greens, taking fives and finishing with 71, to aggregate 289.

A. D. S. Duncan kept up steady form -with bad weather practically all the way. Ho handed in 74, which was good enough to give him an aggregate of 294. The third man was the professional, Douglas, whose 76 gave him an aggregate of 298. Duncan's card was: Out, 5, 5, 3, 5, 3, 4, 5, 5, 3; in 4, 3, 5, 5, 3, 4, 4, 3, 5. His four rounde constitute a great performance, in spite of the fact that he was playing on his home course.

Moss did a fine concluding round of 70, 35 each way. His was a magnificent performance under the conditions and it gained him the Earl Jellicoc Cup for the best eingle round in the open championship. The Challenge Vase, presented by the late Denis O'Rorke for an inter-club teams match, decided in conjunction with the third round, was won by the Hutt Club with an aggregate of 310 (Fisher 82, Cook 77, McGregor 75, Wagg 76). Wanganui was the runner-up with 318 (Silk 78, Reilly 78, Goes 87, M. H. Duncan 75). Other scores were:—Wellington, 321; Wairarapa, Otago and Chrietchurch, 327; Miramar, 333. Troutbeck and the two professionals, L. G. Ross and Macdougall, did not return cards in the final round. The leading 16 professionals qualified for match play in the professional championship.
