RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

THE SPRING MEETING. CARD FOR TO-MORROW. RECENT PERFORMANCES ANALYSED. Excellent fields are engaged for the opening day of the Auckland spring meeting, both in point of number and quality, and patrons are sure to be provided with some good racing. If the weather remains fine the track should be in excellent order. • * Trial Hurdles. ' . < The Trial Hurdles, the opening event of the day, has drawn a field of twelve, but the class is very moderate. Town Beauty, the top-weight, is - a reliable jumper, but has little to his credit as a hurdlers Biform showed promise last season, but is an unlikely starter. Patutahi's best effort to date was his second to Luminary in the Brighton Hurdles last autumn, and if he repeats, that running he should be in the money. Cargen's recent form T"»» been disappointing and Slump does not appeaL. Trowbridge displayed useful form when she ran second to Full Measure in the Panmure Hurdles at Ellerslie last June, but was showing signs of soreness at Te Rapa recently. Subeditor's Cambridge form warrants him getting support, and of the others Prince of Orange, Sleepy Sol and Cat-i-mes appeal most. Most support is likely to come for PATUTAHT SUB-EDITOR. TROWBRIDGE. Three-year-old Classic. Th» betting in the Great Northern Guineas is sure to be monopolised' Pillow Fight, and on Avondale form he stands out in a class on his own. Greek Gold, Sea Ruler and Jonathan have each shown winning form recently, and of this trio the lastnamed pair are likely to be most dangerous. Tea Trader's latest track work has been good, and if back to the form he displayed last autumn he should put up a creditable showing. Midinette is a brilliant track galloper, but disappointed at Avondale, and will have to improve to hare a winning chance. Gold Trail has raced well on several occasions and is an honest filly, who is likely to go a good race. None of the others have shown sufficient form to warrant them having more than an outside chance. The public are sure to support PILLOW FIGHT JONATHAN — SEA RULER. The Sprint Event Included in the field to contest the Shorts Handicap are several proved sprinters and tne race bears an open aspect. Tradesman has shown excellent form this season, and 9.5 should not prove prohibiGolden Wings has not had a race since he ran second to La Moderne in the Manawatu Stakes last April, but he races well fresh, and is sure to be in the picture, for he is a smart beginner and is racing over his favourite distance. Huntingdon finished very fast when he ran third in the President's Handicap at Avondale, and slight improvement on that form points to him being hard to beat. High Comedy's latest track form has been good, and he also is a possibility. Among those lower down in the list Royal Bengal, Persham and Exaggeration are the most likely to cause a surprise. The bulk of the money will probably come for GOLDEN WINGS HUNTINGDON TRADESMAN. The Cup. Twenty candidates have been paid up for in the Mitchelson Cup, and the race is sure to provide a keen contest, in which luck in the running is likely to be of considerable importance. Antique (9.12) is set a hard contract to beat some of the improving lightweights, and, though a good horse at his best, may find the task beyond him. Protomint's latest form has been consistent, but he is meeting a stronger field than any he has yet encountered and has yet to prove himself over the distance. However, he is sure to get solid support. View Halloo has been galloping well since his arrival and is in first-class fettle, and is likely to be one of the favourites on the day. He has never won beyond a mile, though his second to Peter Jackson in the N.Z. St. Leger, one mile and threequarters, was a good effort, and points to him staying on over a journey.. Gibraltar has failed to strike form this season, though he performed well over a middle distance as a three-year-old last season. Te Hoia, on his Jellicoe Handicap form, is a possibility, but Lord Val has yet to prove himself over twelve furlongs. Royal Artist is likely to show up, and this also applies to Tigerism and Great Emblem. The lastnamed ran second in the Plumpton Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Avondale, after getting a bad passage. He finished on well, and with his light impost is a distinct possibility. Gay Cockage, Cruachan and Limeen appeal most, of the others. The favourite selections may be VIEW HALLOO PROTOMINT GREAT EMBLEM. The Hunters' Steeplechase. There are only nine acceptors in the Hunters' Steeplechase, and recent form points to Trouble being made favourite, for he is a reliable fencer and is also a very fit horse. Neil has not had a great deal of experience over the big fences, but has shown promising form. Mashoor has k failed too often in the past and is not lively to be in demand. Haakon is one of tlu» most promising *chasers seen cut for

some time and is sure to run a solid race. Absent and Cat-i-mes may do best among the lighter weights. The latest form points to TROUBLE HAAKON NEIL. Welcome Stakes. A big field is carded for the Welcome Stakes, in which several smart two-year-olds are engaged. A good contest should result. Midian won the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui and also ran two seconds at Wellington, thus proving himself consistent. He is sure to get plenty of support.' Princess Doreen's success in the Avondale Stakes was impressive, but she has failed in the interval, though her speed is undoubted. Gipsy Love, also a winner earlier in the season,, ran second in the Avondale Stakes and is sure to show up to-morrow. Gay Sheila won the Nursery Handicap on the second day at Avondale

and is stated to have improved since that meeting. Star Artist and My Money also finished in the money at Avoildale, and of this pair My Money appeals the better. He is a promising juvenile, who may trouble the opposition to-morrow. Diatomous (who galloped well yesterday), Pelagia, No Doubt, Spiral and Wait and See read best of the remainder. Betting is sure to be brisk, with most support coming for MIDIAN PRINCESS DOREEN GIPSY LOVE. ; ■ The Hacß Contest. In the hack event, the Gordon Handicap, there is every prospect of a big field #)ing to the post, and luck in the draw will be an important factor. Princess Bede can run out a solid mile, and despite her weight will be dangerous. Palace is also speedy, and Karangapai, on recent track form, ■will be very troublesome. Tarporley is also working well and has never been better than at present, and he seldom runs a bad race. Prolyxo is also a possibility. Royal. Gallant's speed from the barrier is a lot in his favour and he is sure to go well, for he is now better, conditioned than ever. Woodful, Arch Ruler and Teels are useful hacks and are sure to get support. Carfex ran two good races at Trentham, and if he runs up to that form he should be in the money. Aesculus, Holly Lu, Moonfleet and Good Run look the pick of those lower downT The favourite division may be CARFEX ROYAL GALLANT KARANGAPAI. The Flying Handicap. Some good performers figure in the Flying Handicap, the concluding event of the day, and the top-weight, Hunting Cry, is sure to get good backing. Chrysology and Bang's Archer will also have friends, and the same applies to Imperial Prince and .Gay Lap, especially the latter. Speedmint, Pomp, S°l°ist and Jalldy Karo also read well, but most money should come for HUNTING CRY CHRYSOLOGY GAY LAP.
