FARMING INDUSTRY.

ROYAL SHOW EXHIBITS. STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S TRIBUTE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Wednesday. In officially opening the Royal Show to-day the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, congratulated the district on its resourcefulness and enterprise, and said that ill spite of the prevailing unprecedented economic depression, which lie was glad to feel every class was facing with a patient outlook, there was a. mutual helpfulness which made him proud to be their Governor-General. There were record entries, and, although necessarily, owing to the cost of transport to the impoverished farming community, the live stock entries were below the average, continued his Excellency, the exhibits on the whole displayed a standard of excellence which bespoke painstaking achievement in all branches of industrial, domestic and scholastic activity, a stimulating indication of productive capacity and enterprise, both in the Dominion generally and this locality in particular. His Excellency stressed the importance of the educational value of a Royal Show and expressed his satisfaction at noting the discrimination and courage shown by judges in not awarding premier honours to any second-class animals, so that breeders knew that if an animal was a champion or lirst prize winner it was easily first class.

In concluding an interesting address, 'his Excellency said: "I should hesitate —indeed, who oould help but hesitate when the governor of the Bank of England himself does t—to prophesy what the final trend of prices for ..agricultural products is likely to be during the present crisis. I fcel certain, however, that we would be poor husbandmen if we laid our plans on the assumption of such prices as operated in times immediately after the wax. Costs Cmiist be adjusted to the present level of prices. This can bo facilitated by rigid determination. Resist all temptation to excessive public expenditure, which creates a burden too heavy for the nation's wealth producers to carry. I 'have been pleased to sec how optimistically, confidently and cheerfully the whole farming community of tho Dominion is facing so pluckily this period of depression." The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W Forbes congratulated the Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral Association upon a Royal Show of great merit. He said the fixture held at Palmereton North was equal to any held in the Dominion. He would not say better, because Canterbury had a healthy rivalry with this centre.

*M-r. Forbes emphasised the importance of co-operation and of producing goods of tho highest standard in order to maintain New Zealand's good reputation. There was at present one trouble—that recently complaints had been received from the Old Country concerning Now Zealand cheese. They should do their best as producers to overcome the difficulty and restore cheese to its former position and prestige by proper methods of manufacture and handling.

The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. C E Macmillan, said that all agricultural and pastoral associations managed their shows excellently. Mutual helpfulness was a quality which would assist all through the depression. Farmers prices were down, but they were carrying on in a cheerful spirit.
