GANDHI AMENABLE.

Eradication of Untouchability His Objective. NEGOTIATIONS IN PROGRESS. CALCUTTA, September 21. In an interview in the gaol at Yeravada by Hindu leaders, Gandhi again expressed his opposition to separate electorates; for the depressed classes, but said that if the conference of Hindus and leaders of the depressed classes favoured a reservation of seats in joint electorates he was ready to accept that and to cofisider stopping his fast. Dr. Ambedkar, on behalf of tire depressed classes, consulted the community and its leaders at a conference late on Monday night. They evolved a new scheme based on joint electorates with adequate safeguards for the protection of the depressed classes, and a deputation went to the gaol to seek Gandhi's ■approval. In the interview, Gandhi declared that his aim was to secure a complete eradication of caste and "untouchability." He desired a permanent agreement to this effect, and that was what he would delight in dying for.
