HAND BLOWN OFF.

FISHERMAN BADLY INJURED

EXPLOSION OF GELIGNITE

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

THAMES, Tuesday.

George Mazuran, single, aged 23, of Auckland, fisherman, had his right hand blown off, his arm shattered and his chest injured last Thursday owing to the premature explosion of two plugs of gelignite on a fishing launch off Mercury Island. . With some companions he was fishing from the launch, and as the sharks were troublesome the members of the party decided to drive them away by throwing gelignite in the water. Mr. Mazuran was about to throw two sticks of gelignite when the charge exploded in his hand. The weather was too bad for the launch to pass round Cape Colville for Coromandel and she had to put into Kennedy Bay. First aid was rendered by a dentist, Mr. Reg. Bell, and Dr. Shortt made the long ride from Coromandel on horseback. The launch took the man' to Mercury Bay and, after a terrible journey by car, he reached Coromandel Hospital 23 hours after the accident. In all that time he did not lose consciousness. Mr. Maznran's condition is reported to be improving.
