"BUY BRITISH."
INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOLS.
CONTROVERSIAL SUBJECT ?
EDUCATION BOARD DISCUSSION.
Disappointment that the Auckland Education Board had been unable to see its way to have school children instructed in the importance of buying New Zealand and British-made goods, was expressed in a further letter from the Te Aroha school committee, which came before the board at its meeting this morning. At a meeting of the board two weeks ago the senior inspector, Dr. J. W. Mcllraitli, said that as the matter was controversial, and one for Government policy, he was unable to make any recommendation. A reply was sent to the committee in terms of the inspector's report. In the letter which came before the board this morning the Te Aroha committee contended that the subject was uot a controversial one. The committee asked that the board should further consider the matter at a later date. .
The president of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association, Mr. S. Takle, wrote informing the board that his association was disappointed with the board's attitude towards local industries, as evidenced by its treatment of the letter from Te Aroha advocating the instruction of children in practical patriotism. He asked that the board should reverse its decision.
Mr. H. S. W. King said that ho was not able to agree with the inspector that the subject was a controversial one. His sympathies were with the To A-roha, committee and he asked if the subject was likely to be brought before the board again. Mr. S. B. Sims said that the board had nothing to do with the school syllabus and that the request, together with the inspector's opinion, should- have been sent on to the Department. Mr. R. Hoe said that the subject was certainlv a controversial one. He had been informed that a body of farmers had stated that it was not prepared to co-operate with the Government, and he understood that that referred to unemployment. That was proofi that the subject under discussion was a controversial one. The board decided to forward all the correspondence on the subject to the Department without comment.
