VIOLENT ROW.
PROHIBITION RIFT. U.S. Republican Party Split On Liquor Issue. "FURIOUS 'PLATFORM' BATTLE." (United P.A. —Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 10 a.m.) CHICAGO, June 13. A swiftly-rising whirlpool of Republican dissension over prohibition engulfed the chosen representatives of the party on Monday on the eve of their national convention on Tuesday. They were ready to renominate Mr. Hoover and sentiment was turning definitely to the VicePresident, Mr. Curtis? for a running mate and all the lesser disputes were over. The platform and procedure seemed headed for a harmonious decision, but no one any longer expected harmony on prohibition. The prediction of a plank acceptable to all of America had gone up in the smoke of the most furious platform battle that any Republican Convention has seen since the League of Nations row in 1020. Haggard and plainly discouraged after many hours of conference the high commanders of the party continued their efforts at compromise. While the indignant "drys" were insistent the "wets" hammered at the doors.
AGAINST PROHIBITION. "REVOLT" SWEEPING U.S.A. NEW YORK, June 9. An anti-prohibition revolt is sweeping the country with wildfire rapidity. Political and industrial leaders are joining tlie movement as a result of the declaration of John D. Rockefeller, jun., that prohibition, which he for long supported, is such an evil that he feels called upon to advocate its repeal. The "wets" have consolidated their forces into the United Repeal Council, which is battling for the inclusion of repeal in the planks of the platform at the forthcoming Republican and Democratic conventions. An overwhelming Republican "wet" sentiment threatens to defeat Mr. Hoover for renoinination unless he changes his avowed prohibition espousal.
