NAPIER MEMORIAL.
EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS. SITE OF COMMON GRAVE. DESIGN FOR ORNAMENTATION. In order to preserve the memory of the victims of the earthquake Napier intends erecting a memorial for the common grave at the Park Island Cemetery in which they were interred. Plans were prepared by the associated architects of i the town and tlio result has been a very I impressive design. The site is a fine one on the brow of a hill, lending itself well to the treatment proposed by the designers of the memorial. A cenotaph will be a feature ! of the liiying out of the site. It is proposed to appeal to the public for the money to pay for the memorial. At present the site is grass covered, and small crosses commemorate those buried there. There were 82 people buried in the common gra.ve and of that number 17 were never identified.
