OPERATIONS AT WAIHI. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, Thursday. The following information has been cabled to the London office of the Waihl Gold Mining Company : — No. 9 Level.—-In the winze being sunk on the south section of the Martha lode in the Grand Junction area the next 21ft assays 70/6 per ton. The width of sulphide ore is about 4ft. No. 10 Level.—The prospecting drive along the hangingwall of tiie Empire lode in the Junction area is a total length of 248 ft. There is nothing material to report. No. 11 Level. —North section of the Empire lode in Waihi area : A crosscut at 50ft east has exposed loft of quartz assaying 75/3 per ton. The north wall is not seen. South section of the State reef in the Junction area : The lode was arosscut at 77ft west, and measuring south the first 3ft assays 17/0 per ton, the next SCt 32/0 per ton, and the last 10ft 22/3 per ton. No. 12 Level.—Martha lode, driving east of the bath crosscut : The total length is 160 ft. There is nothing material to report. OEARITO. One of the directors of the Okarito Five Mile Bench Gold Dredging Company, Mr. L. M. 'Stewart, stated in Chrlstehu'rch this week that they had now reached the position of Xo. 8 bore, which showed values of ijd per cubic yard, with the gold estimated at £4 per ounce. Two other prospecting bores on the northern end of the claim showed poorer values than No. 3. The average return for the six months ended April 2 had been 74.3 ounces per week Since April 2 the average had fallen (o 44.4 ounces per week. The average value obtained for the gold won for the six months was £5 17/4 per ounce. Not a single return, since the company started operations last June, had failed to show il substantial profit. The directors had now decided to turn the dredge round and work southward Some weeks must elapse before a satisfactory dredging face would be opened out. The general dredging conditions and prospective profits southward are stated te be much more attractive than at Uie northern end of the claim.
