TARIFF TOO HIGH.
BUSINESS MEN'S VIEW. DBASTIC BEDUCTIONS IN IMPORTS. DETRIMENT TO REVENUE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Wellington Chamber of Commerce proposes to send a deputation to the Comptroller of Customs next week to discuss cases in which it has been found that high duties forced drastic reductions in imports, to the detriment of the ■Customs revenue. Members of the chamber have reported instances in which imports have been reduced or have almost disappeared _as a sequel to increases in the duties. Imports of cigars, fine-cut tobacco and skin gloves are quoted as examples, and it is expected that the deputation will be furnished with various other items which have been eubstantially influenced by the tariffs.
