HORSES AT MATAMATA.

WAIKATO CANDIDATES. J. CLOTHIER'S TEAM. STANDFAST DOING WELL. A. E. Ellis has been engaged to ride Mr. J. Clothier's team, Prince Val, Lord Val and Woodful, at the Auckland winter meeting. Two of these, Prince Val and Woodful, will be racing at Te Rapa on Saturday, but Ellis will not be north in time, so that Parsons will be on Woodful. No rider has yet been engaged for Prince Val. All three are very ht at present, although Lord Aral's work was interrupted by a slight cold.

W. Casey has again been unlucky with Chief Lap. The gelding collided witn a fence last week, and he received a cut on the stifle. The injury has caused a suspension of his work. His stable-mate, Last Lap, is doing well.

Valueless is rounding into shape after a severe attack of kidney trouble. Handicappers appear to have a very high opinion of this son of Valkyrian, for, although he has not won a race since the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, they keep him up in weights.

Standfast was sent twice round the Matamata track the other morning, and was going very strongly at the finish. Barring accidents, this half-brother to Te Monanui and Taurua promises to run a great race in the Great Northern Hurdles.

The Kaccful—Whewhcnui gelding, trained by his owner, Mr. A. Randrup, is a regular worker on the track, and shows a lot of speed over a few furlongs. He is not yet at his best, but promises to be a payable proposition in a couple of months. Roto, the Potoa—Lady Varco gelding, is to be schooled over the hurdles. Roto is being trained by his owner, Mr. A. MeArthur.

Lucy Rose had not been in Mateer's hands many weeks when she scored a win and a third at Taumarunui. The Lucullus —Autumn Rose mare has progressed nicely since then, and, with the softening of the tracks, she should help swell her trainer's winning record in the very near future.

The Speardance—Blodwin colt, owned by Mr. F. Rose, is now in J. Anderton's stable, near .the Matamata course. He is a solidly-built and an attractive-looking youngster. Anderton is now working a team of three very promising horses.

The Matamata-trained Lady Noreen is an acceptor for Te Rapa on Saturday. This filly has speed, but may take time to run a race, right out. Slump carried the confidence of his party at Wanganui, but failed to pet nearer than sixth. It would seem that the Absurd gelding is going to be very difficult to place.

Valkon is still located at Harper's stable, but he is going to prove vevy difficult to train. Valkon is not an old horse, but he has two very unsightly fetlocks.
