STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

NUKUMAI FOR THE NORTHERN. Nukumai was a trifle sore after his racing at Hawera, and he was allowed to drop out of his engagements at Wanganui. He is going along all right, however, says "The Dominion) and M. Conway states he will, all going well, run in the Great Northern Hurdles. This means that K. Miles will not be available for Easterly.

MAKING SLOW HEADWAY. Although Spring Abbey has been given a fair amount of schooling lie has not made the progress expected of him, and he is still a long way from being a proficient jumper. He has been accepted for in the Maiden Hurdles at Te Rapa on Saturday and the race in public may improve his jumping. This horse has plenty of size and pace, and would only need to take kindly to this branch of the sport to do well. AWAKEN NOT COMING. Awaken will not fulfil engagements at the Great Northern meeting. Her leg filled recently, and although she was not actually sore it was decided not to send her to Auckland. Silvermine will make the trip, however, and will be ridden by B. H. Morris. He has not run at Ellorslie in the winter before, but as the minimum weight has now been lowered it will give him a chance to pay expenses. Tenacre may also make the trip. HAS RACED CONSISTENTLY. Sunny Sky is now being sent along a bit faster in her work at Ellerslie and will lU'obably be seen out at the Waikato meeting next Saturday. The* Hunting Song filly appears to have shaken off the cold that caused her to be eased in her work a short time ago and she should soon be back to her best again. Sunny Sky raced well at Ellerslie, and also at Avondale, and as she is partial to soft tracks she should be a good proposition during the winter months. DOING GOOD WORK. The Cornwall Handicap candidate Gay Cockade is galloping very impressively at Ellerslie and promises to strip a fit horse for the big flat event at the Great Northern meeting. This horse has done really well since he last appeared in public and he should be equally as forward as when he dead-heated with Standfast behind Seatown in the race last year. , Uay Cockade has 7.2, but the fact that R. McTavish has been engaged to ride him will mean that lie will be required to carry several pounds overweight. However, that will be counter-balanced by the fact that he will have a strong and capable horseman to pilot him.

MAKING GOOD PROGRESS. Noil shaped well in a schooling task over hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday morning and he is now thriving much better than was the case a few weeks ago. A ins horse has already proved himselt a nselul hurdler, and at his last start he won at Te Kuiti over a mile and three-quarters. Neil has several jumping engagements at the Great Northern meeting, including the Penrose, Orakei, Panmure Hurdles and the Tamaki Steeplechase. He has had some experience over the Ellerslie country running third in the Mangere Steeplechase at the Auckland autumn meeting last Easter. With a little improvement on that form he should soon be a winner in this department. SHOULD BE IMPROVED.

Paris is to be sent north by Mr. W. T. Hazlett to contest the Great .Northern Steeplechase and he should run well. Last season he had not had a great deal ot experience over fences when he arrived at Ellerslie, but he improved through the meeting. He finished fourth in the Greenlane Steeplechase, fell in the Great Northern Steeplechase on top of the hill the first time, but won the Tamaki Steeplechase on the last day. His next appearance was at Trentham, where he won the Wellington Steeplechase, and, going on to Riocarton, was second in the Grand ZSTational "Steeplechase, won the Beaufort Steeplechase on the second day, but fell while contesting the Lincoln Steeplechase on the final day. Paris has had a couple of outings in steeplechase events during the autumn, but failed to get into a place. However, the experience he had last winter at the jumping business should stand him in good stead during the next few months, and it will be surprising if he does not show up at Ellerslie.

CONSENT FOR AUCKLAND. L. G. Morris was at Wanganui on Thursday, liis injured hand is mending well, and he win bring Consent to tlie Aucidand meeting. Consent will be Air. T. A. Duncan's only representative at tne northern meeting, but a couple of maidens in the stable, Sigma and Ida Merling, will be sent to Otaki. Morris will be recovered by the time the Auckland meeting comes round and will ride Consent himself. L. KNAPP'S TEAM DEPLETED. The Awapuni trainer L. lvnapp started the winter with very good prospects, seeing that he had Pajigolin, Omeo and Otairi all in his stable, but at the present moment they are all "cot" cases, and none of them will come to the Great Northern meeting. Pangolin got in a couple of good wins, but hurt his leg in the Mar ton Steeplechase. Omeo. is lame, and Otairi will be a difficult horse to keep in training. Knapp will have Seneschal as the only representative of his stable at Ellerslie. IN GOOD CONDITION. Tarporley has not been required to do any particularly fast work during the past couple of weeks, but he is in excellent condition for his engagements at the Great Northern meeting, where he figures iu hack events each day. So far this horse has never raced on heavy tracks, but he is a big solid gelding, and, judging by the manner in which lie gets through his work in soft going there seems little doubt but that he will handle the conditions that ure likely to obtain at the Great Northern meeting satisfactorily. NOVICE JUMPERS. The two local hunters Theapis and Haakon were schooled over hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday i. wining, giving their best display to date. They had plenty of pace on and jumped every fence alike, and, taken all round, their exhibition was most encouraging. Both horses have done a solid preparation, but so far neither has co.ntested a jumping race. Thespis is due to make his debut in the Maiden Hurdles at Te Rapa next Saturday, and the experience gained there should stand him in pood stead for his engagements at Ellerslie next month. A HACK CANDIDATE.

Woodful, who has been accepted for in the Whitioia Hack Handicap at Te Eapa next Saturday, showed good form earlier in the season. He won in his first start at Matamata and later was placed at Te Aroha and Paeroa. He has not done a great deal of racing, and only for the fact that he has gone so_re on several occasions there is little reason to doubt that this record would have been considerably extended, for he is a good sort. If produced at his best during the week-end he should make his presence felt, especially now that the going is easier.
