BRITAIN FORMALLY PROTESTS TO JAPAN.
PRECIPITATE ACTION OF FORCE AT SHANGHAI. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LOiNDON, February 1. The British Government has instructed Sir J. F. Lindley, British Ambassador to Tokyo, to protest to the Japanese Government against the precipitate action of the Japanese force at Shanghai and the continued use of the settlement as a base of ; operations. The Prime Minister, Mr. Ramsay Mac Donald, devoted the greatest part of the day to consultations with Ministers and others on Shanghai. During the morning he conferred with Mr. Stanley Baldwin and Sir John Simon, Foreign Minister, and this afternoon with Lord Hailsham, Secretary for War, and FieldMarshal Sir George Milne, Chief of the Imperial General Staff.
