RUSH OF FOREIGN REINFORCEMENTS.
SETTLEMENT SITUATION TENSE AND DANGEROUS. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, February 1. The Shanghai position continues to cause grave anxiety. Reinforcements are being hastened by the British, United States and French Governments to ensure the safety of their nationals in the international settlements. It is hoped that their arrival will have a calming effect. Within the settlement the situation is tense and dangerous. The neutral forces in the settlement were to-day supplemented by a body of marines landed from the cruiser Suffolk, which arrived from Hongkong. The 2nd Battalion, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the No. 1 Mountain Battery from Hongkong, and the Singapore Artillery Brigade are following in H.M.s. Berwick. H.M.s. Kent, flying the flag of Admiral Kelly, Commander-in-Chief of the China station, is now proceeding from Batavia, and is due at Shanghai on Friday. Biggest Mobilisation in Shanghai History. Shanghai has, never seen a bigger mobilisation of volunteer ?. rces * n *^ e w hole of its troublous history. It was estimated this afternoon that 90 per cent of the men of military age are under arms. No progress was made in the negotiations for a satisfactory settlement. Meanwhile, the Japanese and Chinese are consolidating their positions along the Chapei front. An intensive sniping campaign continues. Ihe news that British and American naval vessels are speeding to Shanghai has reassured the foreigners here. The curfew is being rigorously enforced. All vehicles must be off we streets at night. Barricading work continues. Armoured cars and tanks are Patrolling the outlying roads.
