LARGE REBUILDING SCHEMES
FEW SIGNS OF POVERTY,
At the present time there are few signs of poverty in London, according to Mr. F. Lysnar, who returned by the Ulimaroa to-day. The people who are without jobs are on the dole. Rebuilding schemes are to be seen everywhere. "The city is literally being pulled down and built up again," he said. The Hotel Cecil had disappeared and was being replaced by an oil company's business. Most of the money in London was locked up and few people were going in for investments. The general opinion appeared to be that a change of Government would result in a return to the boom days. During the two years that Mr. Lysnar was in London he did not notice either a rise or fall in the amount of business done. With the exception of the brokers everyone eeemed to be busy. There wae certainly not the evidence of poverty which he saw when he visited England two years before the Avar. In Mr. Lysnar's opinion the New Zealand High Commissioner's Office is run along excellent lines, and the exhibits of New Zealand products are attractively displayed. Mr. Wilford appeared to be very popular among Londoners. "New Zealanders are very popular in the Old Country," said Mr. Lyenar. "The Dominion footballers and cricketers are a great advertisement for our country, and our business reputation is high. I was unable to spare the time to see the present New Zealand cricket team play in the matches which took place before I left, but their good form came as a big surprise to a lot of people." Conditions in Sydney. Referring to Sydney, Mr. Lysnar said that the conditions there were shocking. Men who were wealthy when he visited the city two years ago were now penniless and on every side one could see SHrns of unemployment. "It is absolutely sad to see Sydney at the present time," he said.
