BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

The Great South Road Beautifying Society met last evening. In the absence of the Mayor, Mr. J. B. Patterson was voted to the chair. Boundary Sign—The Papatoetoe Town Board advised that they had selected a design from the list submitted by students of the Auckland University College. It was decided to forward a donation of £2 2/ to Mr. Graham Dawson, who submitted the design selected and to congratulate the students upon the exellence of the work. Waitemata Brewery Frontage. — The directors of the Dominion Breweries wrote and stated that they were desirous of extending the improvements of the brewery frontage to the ground in front of the hoardings adjacent to the brewery. Great •satisfaction was expressed by members of the society at the pleasing appearance the new frontage now presented. Destruction of Trees. —Mr. C. S. MeCallum raised the matter of the destruction of a great number of fine trees on the Manurewa public school frontage. Great regret was expressed by members of the society. It was explained that this was a matter over which the local body bad no control, the felling of the trees being a matter dealt with by the school committee. Takanini Reserve.—Mr. Butterworth reported that he had made arrangements to have the reserve graded, trees planted and weeds kept down for a period of twelve months, for a nominal sum. He submitted a plan for the planting of the reserve, and a vote of thanks "was passed to him. The final arrangements for the planting were left in the hands of Messrs. Butterworth arid Leonard. Society's Work.—A report upon the activities of the society for the past month was submitted, and the treasurer's statement showed a credit balance of £52 9/. The following local bodies and societies were represented at the meeting:—Auckland City Council. Auckland Institute of Horticulture, Auckland Automobile Association, I'apakura Town Board, Papakura Beautifying Society, Manurewa Town Board. Papatoetoe Town Board, Otahuhu Borough Council.
