SMALLER GRANT.

AUCKLAND UNEMPLOYED LESS WORK THIS WEEK. NOTICE OF CURTAILMENT. SMALLER GRANTS FOR WEEK. A number of local bodies have received intimations from the Labour Department that they are not to exceed certain sums on the payment of wages under the No. 5 unemployment scheme this week. As-a result several of the authorities state that they will have to put off a number of men. Affixed to the intimation was a nieinorandumthat the Labour Department had received advice from the Unemployment Board on ' Saturday morning tliat they were considerably reducing the district's estimates and local bodies.were requested to keep within their allocations. The City Council's grant for this week has been fixed at £900, and the City Engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, stated this morning that it would be necessary to put about 50 nien off in order to keep within this amount. Last week £470 was spent on wages in the New Lynn and Waitemata area, and they have neen asked to keep the expenditure down to £409 this week. The borough council, stated Mr. G. Lawson, the Mayor, would not be able to make up the deficit, and as a result some men would not be fully employed. In the Mount' Eden district the allocation has been decreased by over £100. The men had already started work when the intimation was received, but it will be necessary, to put about 40 off. Although tlie allocation to the , Waitemata County Council grant has been reduced, it was stated that it would not affect them to a great extent. ■ Mr. W. Slaughter, officer in charge of the Labour Department, stated that there was no curtailment in the No. 5 scheme. Each week a certain amount was allocated to the district, he said, and this hadito be divided, among the various bodies. -. Previously the grants had been made without any regard to the number of men who were stood down each week. Twenty-five per cent of the men were usually stood down each week, and the estimates had been 25 per cent in excess of the actual expenditure. The estimates had now-been brought more-in line with the actual expenditure.
