SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Fabian Club held its usual meeting on Saturday, when Mrs. Bennett gave a lecture on the work of the Akarana Maori Association, giving interesting information on little known anomalies regarding her race. Mr. Montgomerie was in the chair, and there was a vigorous debate.

The monthly meeting of the Whakatane League of Mothers was held in the Parish Hall. The meeting took the form of. a. .magazine afternoon, various members contributing stories and humorous articles. Pianoforte solos were also given. Sirs. Lambert gave a talk on Jamaica. The president took the opportunity to say farewell to Mrs. Lambert and Mrs. Warner, who will soon be leaving Whakataine. Both»were presented with bouquets. tea was dispensed by Mesdames Baker and Buddie.

A bridge party was given in Cambridge by Miss Jean Caw to a number of her friends. The drawing room was artistically decorated with cactus dahlias. Those present were: Mrs. G. Vosper, Misses B. Swayne, E. Skeet, M. Neely, R. Calvert, J. Priestly, J. Brewer, R. White, J. Couper, D. Brycfe, R. Souter, D. Neely, N. Armstrong, G. Martyn, E. Russell, H. Moorliouse, B. Skeet, M. . Souter.

There was a good attendance at the Hamilton croquet lawns on Saturday, ' when the Howden Cup was competed for. Those present were: Mesdames Belgrave, Evans, Turbott, Mercer, Andrews, G. Bartlett, McGonnell, Lamprell, Webster, McMillen, Fraser, Johnson, Verrall, Reeves, G. Seifert, Cole, E. M. Masters, A. L. Sheppard, King, Corner, Munro, B. Bagley, Spiers, Henderson, Dillicar, Scott, Callaghan, Griffiths, A. E. Savage, Muir, G. Wilkes, Honeyfield, Lock, Murchie, Ibbotson, E. Curling, Goodwin, O'Brien, Edwards, Roberts, Misses Jones, Cole, McMillen, Wallnutt, T. Jones, Fulston, Ibbotson.

The annual meeting of the Victoria League- ever ready committee was held in the league rooms, when Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane was in the chair. There was a large attendance of members. The. report and balance-sheet was read by the secretary. The chairman commented upon the splendid work achieved by the committee during the year. Through helping at street collections, bazaars and bridge parties, the sum of over £300 had been collected. Help had been given to the cancer campaign committee, and concerts had been given at the Knox Home. The secretary reported that the fifth edition of the Victoria League cookery book was selling so well that arrangements are in hand to publish a sixth edition. Through the sales of the cookery book more than £100 has been given to various institutions. It was decided to hold a jumble sale early in April, and the chairman asked all members to help in collecting clothing, produce, etc., for it, and thus ensure its success, as the committee derided to give a, share of the profits to the earthquake relief fund. The sewing circle, with Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane as convener, reported that 700 new and second-hand garments had been made and sent to needy families living in the country. The parcels of clothing Were chiefly sent to clergymen and schoo] teachers for distribution. The following: officers were re-elected for the ensuing year: Chairman, Mrs. J. B.
