STUDENTS ENROLLED.

INCREASE IN CANTERBURY. I MORE THAN 25 PER CENT. I (By Telegrapn.—n-wn correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A remarkable increase in the number of students enrolled at Canterbury University College has taken place this year, the difference being fully 25 per cent more than the total at this time last year. Reasons for such a large increase are difficult to determine, but among the factors accounting for the greater popularity of the college are the excellent hostels provided for students from other parts of the Dominion and the existence of the Students' Union, which affords facilities for promoting socl il life among the undergraduates. % The rector, Dr. J. Hight said that the growth of population and the fact that each year there were more pupils at the secondary schools who passed the matriculation accounted for a steady increase in the number of students who entered the university college. "There is no doubt," Dr. Hight added, "that in time of stress many people feel • that the systematic training of young people far outweighs all other considerations. They realise more than they otherwise would the advantage that higher education gives to a young person starting out in life."
