"VETERAN THIEF."
PREFERS GAOL TO FREEDOM. There is no accounting for taste. Te Haurangi, a labourer, aged 58, who appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this morning on a charge of stealing a felt hat worth 30/, told the police when arrested that he wanted to go back to gaol. When the charge was read, accused pleaded guilty. Detective nergeant Kelly said that about one o'clock yesterday afternoon accused had gone into a solicitor's office, had picked up a hat, and had walked out. He was watched all the time. "Te Haurangi is one of the Dominion's veteran thieves," said Mr. Kelly. "He is an habitual criminal out on license, and says he wants to go back to gaol." "He can go," dryly remarked the magistrate. "One month."
