TRAMWAY ECONOMY.
DUNEDIN NOT "SACKING." MEN BEING RETIRED. SAVINGS IN. WORKSHOP. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") DUNEDIN, this clay. The Tramways Department of Dunedin is 'not adopting an economising scheme of "sacking" men, reported to ■be contemplated by the Christclnirch Tramway Board. A reduction of staff is being brought about in another and less severe manner as the men retire on superannuation, or in other ways. They are not being replaced. By that process the number on the payroll has been reduced by about ten within, the first six months, and this may go o'n a while longer. A saving in expediture is also being effected in the workshops, which are practically closed during the holidays. At the same period in other years the workshops carried on right through. The curtailing of expenses is absolutely necessary as an alternative to raising fares. It is being gone about very carefully so as to entail a minimum r f 'hardship.
