CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES.
STEDMAN WESTS TITLE
BARNETT WELL BEATEN.
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")
CHRIST.CHURCH, this day.
A. C. Stedmaii, the young Auckland representative player, clinched the greatest sufccese of his tennis career early this afternoon, when he won the final of the New Zealand men's singles championship.
Stedman's opponent was H. A. Barnett, the Cantei-bury youth, who yesterday caused a surprise by defeating Noel Wilson, of Wellington. In to-day's match the Aucklander's terrific driving proved too much for-Barnett, and Stedman took the title in straight sets. In the first set Barnett made a good fight of it, and five games all were called. Stedman won the next two games, however, and in the next two sets the Cantab could win only four games. The scores were 7 —5, 6 —l, 6—3.
