SEASON'S FIXTURES. (By-ORION.) October 4—Metnveri T.C. October 11—Waikato.T.C. October 18 —Northland T.C. , October 'Jo, 27—Greymouth T.C. Handicaps for the Waikato meeting are due to-morrow and acceptances close on Friday next. Horses eligible for the New-Zealand Cup who are in training but who were not nominated are Naeoro, Omaha, Pluto and The Abbey. Although The Abbey is not entered for the New Zealand Cup there is a possibility of W. Clifton taking the chestnut to Addington: for the November meeting, where there are several races to suit him. Among the recently-imported English horses nominated for the Methven meeting are Holly Bank (late Reality), Banffshire Lad, Our George (late Special Lad), and Stanley T. Holly Bank and Stanley T. are trotters, while the others are natural pacers. All have made good progress during the short period they have been in this country. J. Gee has, Anseline back in work, and the bay mare will be found racing shortly. When working with Maid of the Mountains yesterday she did not trot as solidly as usual, but this was probably because she was fresh.' When she has done a bit more work she will settle down to her task. Without being a real good one, the daughter of Nut Ansel consistently pays her way eac-li season. The indications are that the Auckland province will be more strongly represented at' the next New Zealand Cup meeting than in the past. R. A. McMillan is in position to make up a useful team to accompany his Cup horse, Machine Gun, J. Shaw is likely to be on hand with Warplane, L. McMahon will take Gold jacket, and S. August, all going well, will be present with Jewel Pointer and perhaps another. A. Julian is not asking much of Etta Cole these times, and light jogging with an occasional sprint for a furlong is mainly her work. The chestnut mare has demonstrated many times on the track that she has the speed to win races but in the past she has not run up to the form she has shown in her training. She is now at the right age to be solid, and Julian may develop her into a first-class trotter, as he has had much success with square-gaited horses. While he was-not required to make time, the Derby candidate Great Fame, when worked out yesterday by A. Newdick, paced very resolutely. The grey son of Nelson Fame givesr ther impression that in the next couple > of months he will be found going very fast, but it is doubtful whether he will be advanced enough to have a chance of winning th 9 Derby at Christmas when pitted against the more experienced and beet three-year-olds of the south. Nelson Fame was a brilliant horse himself and it will be remembered that in his exhibition at Alexandra Park against time for a mile he went the first half in a shade under a minute. Unfortunately, he fell after going six furlongs, and the attempt to establish a new record was frustrated. Since then Nelson Fame died, and it is a pity he was not mated with sufficient mares to leave a good representation behind. In Great Fame he appears to have left a horse likely to be a good

PERMISSION TO JOG.

While those trainers at the Otaliuhu course have nothing but praise for the dirt track and grass track on which they are permitted to work their teams, the opportunities to jog horses in wet weather are not offering, and they feel that it would be reasonable if they were allowed to use the inside of the course. The course proper is open to theni three days a week and they appreciate being able to use it, but in wet weather the dirt track is thrown out of working condition, and if it happens to be a day when the grass track is closed, trainers cannot do other than jog their, horses on the roads. If permitted to walk and jog in the centre it would meet the position and at the same time do away with the danger which may befall horses on the public roads these days; when there is :-o much motor traffic.
