BACHELOR TAX?.

PROPOSAL 7 APPROVER

MEN EARNING OVER £200. •SHOTJXD BEAU SOME BUBDBX* CHAMBER OF COMMERCE VIEWSL A bachelor tax ie favoured "by t&* council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. At to-day's meeting of the chambes the following resolution was passed, at the suggestion of Mr. A. G. Lunns in view of the reduced profits of business, and the consequent reduction of income tax returns, the Government is urged to give serious consideration to the possw bility of widening the field: of income tax by the imposition of this tax on bachelors over the age of 21 years, provision being made for rebates ia ease* of hardship." In presenting the motion Sir. Lunn said his feelings on the subject of taxation of. bachelors were strong. There were thousands of single men, with no obligations, earning over £200, and they should be bearing some of the burden of increased taxation. A small tax on them would make a substantial difference to the country in the aggregate. Mr. W. A. Boucher said it was evident that in the coming year the Government would have to find fresh avenues through which revenue could be obtained. Mr. A. E. Seaman said that to lower the taxable amount to £200, and provide an elaborate system of exemptions, would only make the position worse. Mr. L. A. Eady said that the English system of imposing the tax at the source of earning would eliminate difficulties.
