QUAY STREET SURFACE.

QUITE WORN OUT. : ■ •TO BE RE-ASPHALTED. Quay Street is. to be repaved. Reporting to tlie Auckland City Council last night, the city engineer (Mr. J. Tyler) stated that the compressed asphalt paying laid in 1913 had gone beyond the stage of economy from the point of maintenance, which had cost £2378 since 1925. - _ In view of that the engineer was of opinion that it would he much more economical to the council ware the street to be repaved, as the surface was in urgent need of attention. The Neuchatel Asphalte Co., Ltd., who recently undertook the work of repaying Queen Street,' had advised him that they were prepared to undertake the work upon the same terms' and 'conditions as Queen Street with Trinidad Asphaltic Concrete 2in thick, at' a cost to the .council of £4560, the area of the carriageway being 1049J square yards. Those conditions covered a free maintenance guarantee for five years, during which period the council would, on the above maintenance figures, be saved half the cost of repaving. The concrete foundation was in good condition and there would be little or no expense in that regard, and further, the present heavy maintenance could be cut out were the work commenced now. One half of the roadway could be done this year, and the balance the following year, and the company had stated that it would be agreeable to await payment for the first half until April, 1931, the second payment falling due in April, 1932. The report was adopted and the council decided to try and arrange with the Railway Department ■ to put its section of the road f (the middle) in proper order.
