LABOUR-SAVING MACHINERY.

In a recent issue of the "Star" a correspondent writing on the above subject gives machinery as one of the causes of unemployment. Labour-saving machinery does not seem to reduce the cost of production. On the farm, for example, the tractor has taken the place of horses. The tractor and petrol come from Amei'ica, otherwise the money circulated among the farmers. The products from wheat are not any cheaper. The same applies in many other cases. If machinery is to increase unemployment without decreasing the cost of production, wages cannot be the cause of the high cost of living. Does more machinery mean more unemployment, and increased taxation on those working to keep those not working? ANOTHER INTERESTED.
