FIRST DAY AT ELLERSLIE.

Master Lu's Greenlane Steeples. Chromadyne and Hannibal Share

Jervois.

The meeting opened with the first division of the Jervois Handicap, for which Annoyer, Gold Lily and Kilinthia were scratched. Most money (£2449) in this event icame for Sir Mond, w;th Air Laddie (£1408)-and Catoma (£685) next in demand. - The winner carried £779. When they were let go, Chromadyne began test,, attended by Currajong, Principal and Catoma, and along the hack the oftler was Chromadyne, Catoma, Principal, Sir. Mond, Catulus, Currajong, Air Laddie, Takarunga, Brampton and Little Gift. Catulus went to the front crossing the. top from Chromadyne and Principal, then came Air Laddie, Goldlike, Day Lass, Catoma and Sir Mond. When they turned for home Air Laddie was in charge, with Chromadyne, Principal and Sir Mond handy, but half-way down the running Chromadyne forged ahead and won by half a length from Air Laddie, who beat Principal by two lengths. Sir Mond was fourth, followed by Currajong, Catulus, Roman Pearl, Brampton, Red Day, Goldlike, Day Lass and Takarunga.

Favourite Wins Greenlane. There were only seven runners in the Greenlane Steplechase, the withdrawals being Rawhetu, Hymestrason and Foxhound.' It was not a great betting event and when the machine closedMaster Lu ( £1364), Potoanui (£1262) and Rahepoto (£1150) carried the bulk of the money. St. Warrigal led . over the first fence, followed by Master Lu, Marita, Lucess, Lucilius, Rahepoto and Potoanui. Eahepoto made a bad jump at this fence, and came to grief at the next obstacle. St. Warrigal showed the way over the double from Marita, Master Lu, Potoanui and Lucess, and'they went up the hill in that order. Master Lu ran up second to St. Warrigal as they • descended the hill, with Marita and Lucess next, and in the run home Master Lu won nicely by five lengths from Lucess, who finished on to beat St. Warrigal for second money. Marita was fourth, then came Lucilius and Potoanui.

A Close Finish,

When the .field lined up for the second division of the Jervois Handicap, Restaurant and Gay Caballero were missing, and in a close finish the favourite Hannibal won by a head. The winner carried £1431, Royal Visitor £1243, and Valreina £1216, while Gay Cockade, who ran second, was entrusted with £753. Snow Prince began best from Valreina, Npil and Spring Abbey, and 'along the back the order was Snow Prince, Valreina, Perfecto, Gay Cockade, The Sun and Royal Visitor. Crossing the top, Gay Cockade took charge, attended by Valreina, Royal Visitor, Snow Prince, The Sun, Valcuir, Unoco and Hannibal. There was not much change as they entered the straight, and in a stirring finish Hannibal got up to beat Gay Cockade by a head, with Valreina a similar distance away. Royal Visitor was fourth, then came Valcuir, Micrometer, Spring Abbey, Trishna, Neil and JLTnoco.

Easy Win in Penrose.

Glenstar, Manifest, Luminary and [Respirator declined their engagements in the Penrose Hurdles, in which event most money came for Taumai, who carried £2290, next best backed being Sir Archie ( £1936) and Harbour View ( £1097). Marble Mount led over the first fence from Kairuri, St. Ames and Quineoma, but passing the stand Taumai was up with Marble Mount, then came Kairuri, St. Ames, Quineoma and Sir Archie. Going along the back Taumai was, six lengths .clear of Marble Mount, with Kairuri a further ten lengths away, followed by Qumcoma, St. Ames, Harbour View,. Kongo and Sn Archie, the latter coming to grief at the fence by the six-furlong poa> . mai turned for borne well ahead of Quineoma and Harbour \iew, and went on to win by fifteen lengths from Kairuri, who beat Harbour -View b> three lengths. Kongo and Marble Mount and St. Ames fell at the second to last fence.

Great Northern Hurdles. When the field paraded for the Great Northern Hurdles Star ™ Kauwini, Omeo and Mountain Guide w«re absent, leaving nine candidates to con test the big hurdle event. Bettmg was brisk and when the machine closed "Roman Abbey (£3249), Mister Gamp •Gamp (£2289), Aurora Borealis ( £2IIL J and King's Jest (£1400) received most support, and the public summed the race up fairly well. again Roman Abbey was in front, attended by Wako King, Mister Gamp and Aurora Borealis, then came Kamehameha and King's Jest. Elysinor fell at the fonco by the birdcage. King's Jest ran up fourth along the back and crossing the top he r an ff irto the leal with Roman Abbey, Wako King, Mister Gamp and Aurora BoreaHs next.

Roman Abbey moved up again and led to the last fence, with King's Jest alongside him; the last-named thendrew out, and stayed on to get the verdict by three lengths from Roman Abbey, who beat Aurora Borealis by twenty lengths. Daylight was the only other contestant to finish. Maunga was pulled up along the back the last time.
