COUNCIL STORM.

ONLY FIVE AT SUPPER. MAYOR'S REMARKS RESENTED "UNWARRANTED ATTACK'* ALLEGED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Only four city councillors partook of the Mayoral hospitality at supper after the Council meeting last night, owing to a "breeze" during the.business done in committee. The trouble, rfc is understood, was caused through the carrying of a motion, moved by Mr. A. E. Armstrong earlier in the evening, that a committee be set up to ascertain the views of council employees on the question of introducing a 40-hour week. When the council resumed in open meeting Mr. J. W. Beanland said he thought it was right to mention something of what was done in committee, seeing that councillors had been told by the Mayor (the Rev. J. K. Archer), that he did not wish them to be his guests that night. He (Mr. Beanland) would say that he did not want to sup at the Mayor's table again. The Mayor said he was sorry Mr. Beanland had taken up that attitude, but what he said was what he meant to say. _ At supper the Mayor and Messrs. D. G Sullivan, M.P.; E. Parlane, F. R. Cooke and T. H. Butterfield were the onlv ones present. Mr E H. Andrews said after the meeting that after Mr. Armstrong's motion had been carried in open council, and while the council was in committee afterwards, the Mayor made a violent attack on those councillors who voted for the motion. Personally, said Mr. Andrews, he was very sorry that the Mayor, who was supposed to conduct meetings impartially, had made such an unwarranted attack.
