DEVIATION PROPOSAL.

STATEMENT BY DEPARTMENT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) . . WELLINGTON, Monday. The Railway Department states that the two level crossings near Hikurangi have never been considered especially dangerous in comparison with many others. The Department states that the approximate estimate of the cost of forming a deviation was £2500 in 1924. when the Whangarei County Council considered that there was nothing in the position of the level crossings to warrant a heavy outlay. The Whangarei Borough Council in 192G supported a deviation proposal, but when it was pointed out that a contribution toward the work by the council would have an important; bearing on the matter, no action was taken by the council to provide funde for the work.
