MANGERE EAST AFFAIRS.

BATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION. COMPLAINT OF BUS SERVICE. The Mangere East Ratepayers' Association met in the Mangere East Hall last night, Mr. J. Clark presiding. He welcomed Mr. A, S. Rickards, one of the local representatives on the Manukau County Council. Mr. Rickards reported that preliminary arrangements were already in hand for widening and improving the footpath from the railway crossing to Paine's Corner, while the rest of the path as far as Mr. Kay's residence was being coated with bitumenised tar. He also reported that a thorough inspection of tlie noxious weeds in the Mangere riding had been made, and as a result the council had authorised 60 notices to be sent out. In view of several applications from residents for the tarring of their properties by the council. Mr. Rickards reported that the council had decided only to do semi-official places, such as the church and sports grounds, and not to touch private properties. In reply to a question as to how the rates had been received, Mr. Rickards reported that they had come in very satisfactorily, there being no bad debts. He also reported that when the council representative attended at the hall to receive rates, only one ratepayer had paid at that time. It was pointed out by members that the representative had attended just before Christmas, which was some time before the rates were due. A letter -was received from a ratepayer drawing the association's attention to the bus service operating between Mangere and the city. He complained of overcrowding, and a discrepancy in fares charged for sectional trips, and said no notices were displayed in the buses setting out the various sections en route. After several members had expressed complaints, the following resolution was carried unanimously: "That representations be made to the Manukau County Council re the unsatisfactory conditions of the bus service operating in the district." The chairman reported that an additional postal box bad been placed in the district at the corner of Grey's Avenue and Massey Road, but as it was cleared only at 9.30 a.m. and 3 p.m., mails still had to be posted, over the crossing to catch 'the morning train to the Waikato and Bay of Plenty districts. It was decided to suggest to the council that the two boxes" in the district be cleared at 6.15 a.m.
