SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

_ The Kumeu branch of the W.C.T.U. held its first meeting,for 1930 on Friday afternoon. A paper was read by Mrs. 11. Martin, on the life of Francis Williard, and Mrs. J. Wilson gave an address on "Sunday Observance." A report of activities during the summer nfonths was received, showing that parcels of clothing had been forwarded to deserving cases. Arrangements were made" to hold a "Bring and Buy" afternoon in May, in aid of :the Trancis Williard Home.

The Onehunga branch of the W.C.T.U. met in the Methodist schoolroom last week, Mrs. Stacey presiding. A paper and readings on the life of Francis Wiilard was given by Mrs. Craig. A vote of sympathy was passed to the daughter and family of Mrs. Ormiston, who was the oldest member of the union, and who passed away .this month. x** * *

Cerruty, • of Gardner Road, Epsom, gave a social and dance last evening in honour of Miss Tlielma St. Clair Whyte, of Remuera, whose marriage takes place next Saturday. /The j rooms were filled with various summer, and autumn flowers, large bowls of j bright scarlet cannas having pride of place in the ballroom. Supper was served in the billiard room, pink carnations and gerberas gracing the tables. Mrs. Cerutty received the guests in a black fisher net frock, inset with large gold tinsel medallions. Mrs. St. Clair Whyte was in a black and silver insertion frock; Miss, Marjorie Cerruty, who assisted to receive the guests, wore a parchment toned lace gown, with cherry velvet sash. Miss Thelma St. Clair Whyte was in a gown of black silk pin spotted net, with frilled skirt. Among the guests were: —Miss Margaret McKelvie, flame tulle and gold lame bridge coat; Mrs. Ewen, period frock of black taffeta with broad pink_ transparent hem; Mrs. Spencer White, rose pink niuon with lace inserted; 1. Tlie leaders of the Auckland Methodist Young Women's Bible Class Union met at the Domain 011 Saturday afternoon to discuss class problems. After spending an enjoyable afternoon amid beautiful surroundings, an adjournment was made to the tea kiosk, which 'was gaily decorated in pink flowers for a cheerful afternoon tea, and later the discussion was continued at the Grafton Road Methodist Sunday School. Miss. Rita Clark, the president of the union,'presided.

Mrs. 800 l gave at evening at her home, Greenwood's Corner, Epsom, on Saturday night in honour of the fourth anniversary of, her wedding. . A party was given on "Saturday by Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Hancox at their home, Buckland Road, Epsom, to celebrate the coming of age of their eldest

daughter Clarice. The guests were invited for tennis in the afternoon, remaining for tea and the evening. The tea and supper tables were set on the wide verandah, which was prettily decorated with streamers, balloons, and Chinese lanterns. Tall vases of cosmos in pink and'mauve decorated the tables, on which a beautiful birthday cake was the chief attraction. The toast of the evening was proposed by Mr. A. Bardell, that of the host and hostess by Mr. K, Boswell. Much merriment was caused by the presentation of an enormous chocolate key. After tea the guests spent a jolly time in dancing, competitions, and a treasure hunt. Mrs. Hancox received her guests in a rose beige crepe de chine frock, and Miss Hancox was in lemon georgette. Among those present were: Mrs. Hancox, sen., Mrs. Arthur Bardell, Mrs. Arthur Hancox, Mrs. McCarroll, Mrs. K. Boswell, Misses Gwen McCarroll, Maisie Clayton, Joyce Hancox, Joyce Wade, Marjoric Dalrymple, Kathleen Hancox, and Dorothy Hancox.
