MAORI CULTURE.

DR. BUCK'S INVESTIGATION.

BRIEF TOUR OP DOMINION.

MAY LECTURE IN AUCKLAND.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, Monday.

Dr. Buck, formerlyi a member representing the native rack in the New Zealand Parliament, and now a research officer of the Bishop Museum, Honolulu,, is. paying a brief visit to the in the course of his interesting task of tracing the development of • Polynesian culture. He attended the recent ceremonial gatherings of native people on the East Coast, and he is now making a tour of New Zealand's principal museums. He left to-night for Dunedin and will on the return journey inspect the Canterbury Museum, gathering data for his work, which will be completed on his- return to Honolulu.

"One feature which will directly interest New Zealanders," remarked Dr. Buck, "is that what we. learn from the islands of Polynesia forms the background for our study of the Maori. By comparison .with the results of research into early cultural conditions in the Cook Group, Samoa and other islands, we are able to see what the Maori brought with him, and how he has developed under the different conditions of life and climate in New Zealand."-

Dr. Buck will complete his work-by a close examination of the Maori material in the Dominion Museum and the Auckland War Memorial Museum. He has received an invitation from the Auckland Institute to lecture in Auckland before his departure on April 8, and fte will give his only public address in Auckland, if the time is suitable, to the Auckland committee.

Particulars of train arrangements-and issue of cheap excursion tickets in connection with the Bay of Plenty race meeting at Tauranga on March 22 are advertised in this issue. The quarterly meeting of the Primary School Committees' Association' will-be held to-morrow-evening,.
