SUBSIDY ON PORK.
QUESTION OF REMOVAL. DUTY ON BRAN AND POLLARD. (By Telegraph.—Own CorrespondPnt.) MORRINSVILLE, this day. The member for Waikato, Mr. F. Lye, has been active in the interests of pig producers since Parliament closed. He has just received a letter from the Minister of Agriculture, hinting at the removal of duties on bran and pollard at an early date. When the Government announced its intention of lifting the subsidy on pork •for export, there were protests from pig farmers, and demands that the duty on wheat by-products used for pig food should be removed as a compensating concession. Mr. Lye wrote the Minister reminding him that the Wheat Committee of the House, while approving the sliding scale of duties on milling wheat and flour, had also recommended that bran and pollard should be admitted into New Zealand free of duty. Mr. Lye had stated he regretted the Minister had not announced the removal of duties on stock foods at the same time as he announced the lifting of the pork subsidy. This omission had made pit*producers apprehensive as to the future of the industry, which is now of increasing value to the country. In his reply to Mr. Lye's letter the Minister states that the Wheat Committee's recommendation concerning bran •and pollard has not been overlooked, and he hopes to be in a position to make a statement regarding the matter at a comparatively early date.
