WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

The New Lynn branch of the Women's [nstitute hold its meeting on Monday in the Foresters' Hall. Mrs. Howson ■ presided over an attendance of 60 members and visitors. . It was decided to adopt the word "Loyalty" as the slogan for the institute. The new committee for tho year and one new member were elected. The musical programme, which took the form of a Schubert afternoon, was arranged uy Mrs. Waygood and party. Mrs. Waygood read an interesting paper on Schubert's life and compositions. The reading was interspersed with musical items composed at different periods. Mrs. Waygood, Mrs. Bollard, Mrs. Parry, Miss James, Mrs. Armstrong and Master Waygood contributed the items. Mrs. Dudley Dorman, president of the Federation of Women's Institutes, gave a short address. She complimented "her infant," as she termed the New Lynn branch", on the progress it had made since its inception. An antique exhibition revealed a few of the treasures that are to be found in many Auckland homes. Two old bed-warming pans, one 200 years old, and the other 150 years old, were interestedly examined. A Phoenician tear-jar, old hand made lace and linen, hand wrought gunmetal plates, a snuff box 200 years old, hand carved ivory | chessmen and draughts, and old silver were just a few of the antiques displayed in which a very keen interest was taken. Afternoon tea, at which the hostesses wore Mrs. Howson, Mrs. Stillwell and Mrs. Walker, closed a most entertaining afternoon. ■*
