RELIEF WORK.

HUNDRED MEN PLACED.

JOBS AT WHANGAMATA.

IDLE CROWN LANDS.

BIG AFFORESTATION SCHEME.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WAIHI, this day,

Arrangements have been made to send 100 men from Auckland by steamer on Saturday to Whangamata, on the East Coast, where officers of the State Forest Service have reclassified a big area of Crown lands. The area is between 20,000 and 30,000 acres. Afforestation on a large scale is planned, but a great deal of preliminary work will be necessary before next planting season. It is reported from Whangamata that the Northern Company's steamer Apanui has been chartered to make the trip, and arrangements have been made to house the men on their arrival.
