FOR BACKBLOCKS WOMEN.

REST HOUSES AT SEASIDE.

INNOVATION - IN AUSTRALIA,

Victorian women have followed the example of the women of New South Wales in the way. of establishing rest places for women and children from the backblocks. Those in and around Sydney are delightful, and are so deeply appreciated by the women from the country that it is difficult to express their value. Following is an account by a Melbourne writer of a similar effort made by the Countrywomen's Association there: — "It is good news that the Country Women's Association has purchased a rest house where country women and children may come for holiday. The rest house is on one of the loveliest parts of the Bay—Half Moon Bay at Black Rock. The coast here is particularly lovely with its crescent bay, its red" brown cliffs covered thickly with tea-tree, and its pier, with the old Cerbeus lying moored not far away. The house, known as "Wallaroy," was formerly a boardinghouse, and consequently it is roomy and well equipped. It stands on a block 140 ft by 200 ft, and is fully furnished. A number of small bungalows are erected in the grounds, and there is room to build more. Thirty guests may be taken. Though the house is on the 'beach road at Black Rock, it is not far from the tram. It is within five minutes' walk of the Black Packtrain, so that visitors who feel inclined for shopping will be able easily to spend a day in the city. It is only a few minutes' tram journey to Sandringham, and from there trains run to Melbourne every 15 minutes, taking 35 minutes over the journey. Theatres are thus within easy distance, too. "The C.W.A. intends to receive guests almost immediately under the mallee holiday scheme. Five convalescent cases from the mallee will be admitted as soon as the home is opened. Only a few of the women anxious to take a holiday under the mallee holiday scheme can be accommodated at the new home. The rest of the 4000—for there are nearly that number who would dearly love the holidaywill be accommodated with people owning houses near <rhe beach between Melbourne and Frankston."
