A SAMOAN CHIEF.

In a recent issue of the "Auckland Star" our Samoan correspondent, referring to High Chief Faumuina, said that he had been under a cloud. This reference was entirely political, but it is contended by Faumuina that a different interpretation might be placed upon it. Our attention is also drawn to the fact that in the House of Representatives the Hon. W. Nosworthy, Minister for External Affairs, referred to Faumuina in the followins terms:— "Samoan of high chiefly rank and of good, repute; has resided for some years past at Lepea on outskirts of Apia; has knowledge of English, and has until recently been conspicuous for leadin« the Lepea people in village reforms ad°vocated by the Administration; his vi|age has electric light, ?oo d sanitation, has been completely remodelled, whilst J-aiimuina was himself the leader of the J-etu o Samoa, an adaptation of the Boy «nt U a ™°7 e . m « nt . initiated by the preleent Administrator; has not yet achieved appointment as a Faipule or other native Stated in Ma «h last that «m district has no complaints."
