LOCAL BODIES.

NEW LYNN BOROUGH COUNCIL

The New Lynn Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor (Mr. C. F. Gardner) presided.

By-laws.—Prior to the transaction of ordinary business a special meeting was held for the purpose of adopting by-laws governing revised water charges, erection of hoardings and posters, and pedal bicycle registration. The new by-laws were adopted.

Changes of Street Names.—A proposal to change the names of certain streets in the borough was approved of. Smith Street will now be known as Croydon Road over the New Lynn and Glen Eden sections of roadway. Matai Street (Kelston) changed to Koromiko Street. Cardwcll Street West and North to Veronica Road.

Great North Road.—Three tenders were received for the work of sealing in bitumen the shoulders of the concrete main highway as follows: —B. Sokolich, £385 16./8; H. Brav and Co.. £385 11/8; A. B. Brodie, £330 16/8. The lowest tender was accepted.

Sanitary Inspector—A large number of applications were received for the position of sanitary inspector and turncock to the council. Mr. Watkinson was ultimately appointed at a salary of £275 per year. It was resolved to terminate the present arrangements with the Health Department for the supervision of the 'borough. This work will now be undertaken by the council's sanitary inspector.

Transport Law Amendment Bill. —The Mayor reported on 'his visit to Wellington and giving evidence before the Select Committee against certain proposals contained in the above measure, as empowered under delegation from the western suburban local bodies. The council endorsed the Mayor's action.

Telephone Call Box.—lt was decided to urge upon the Department the advisability of installing this facility in time for the opening of the new Post Office.

Post Office Frontage.—An offer of 300 paving squares from the Amalgamated Brick Company for the ■ paving of the frontage to the new Post Office was accepted with thanks.

Plans—The Auckland Bus Company submitted for the council's approval plans and specifications for the erection of an up-to-date garage, to accommodate their fleet of buses.

Triangle Reserve. —The council decided to improve the condition of this reserve, and provide seating accommodation for residents.

Storm Water. —Letters from Messrs. Akehurst and Green were received complaining of damage to their properties during the heavy rainfall of last week. These were referred to the public services committee.

Noxious Weeds. — The conucil decided to invite tenders for the clearing of noxious weeds on all the borough reserves.
