"HEAVE HO."
LAUNCH GOES ASHORE.
PASSENGERS' PREDICAMENT.
EVENTFUL HOLIDAY,
The twinkling lights of the city was a glad sight for a large number of excursionists who returned last night by the launch Sambo after an exciting day down the gulf.
During the morning the launch Wakanui set out for Beachlands and Maraetai with a holiday crowd on board anticipating a delightful day on one of the nice beaches down that way. Good progress was made in the early part of the trip, but a bit later the oil engine of the launch began to develop an asthmatical cough, and the engineer was kept busy with the engine to get the little craft as far as Beachlands. Then a start was made for Maraetai, where more trouble was encountered. The Wakanui got on a big burst of speed when near the Maraetai wharf and put herself firmly ashore on the beach. A rope was attached to the launch and many excursionists heaved enthusiastically in an endeavour to get the Wakanui back to her element.
A few of the excursionists decided that the day had been exciting enough without further adventure, and availed themselves of the opportunity to get back to Auckland by motor car. The launch Sambo was sent down to Maraetai to bring the others back.
