BOOKMAKERS PAY.
"COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE." Although the Nightmarch-Loquaciouis doable was not sought after to the same extent as many others, the bookmakers who generally record business before a meeting ihad to pay out a few large amounts (says a Sydney writer). The chief winner in this regard was reported to be Mr. Robert Miller, owner of Loquacious, and he also supported his mare well at the finul pre-post discussions. A prominent bookmaker in Sydney a few years ago, but who now, resides in New Zealand, displayed good judgment also. He thought from the outset that the Metropolitan would 'be Loquacious , mission, but he did not couple her with Nightmarch until the Hatter's"' programme for the Randwick events was definitely announced. He supported the double at the Hawkesbury meeting, and the following day or so, and it was stated that he had to collect a eum approaching £10,000. Of that amount a considerable portion was laid in one quarter, and the balance was taken in £1000 lots. ; ..: Tie leading firm of operators "that could (have ibeejn worse" for them. They laid a large ~ amount straight out against Nigihtmarch on the Epsom Handicap to a' weH-known Victorian owner-trainer, who also had to receive another £5000 straight-out wager from another operator. The latter bookmaker laid the double for about £7000, but the aggregate was made up of £1000 and £2000 lots. There were several winners of small. four-figure amounts, and their outlays were fairly ■big, as they did not invest until Nightmarch had been chosen definitely to contest the mile race. Bookmakers who restrict their business to the course had very big liabilities" after the first day at Randwick, but they recouped most of the losses on the following Monday, and those who did not report ft slight moiling margin said, "So far, I am out my «speneee.". >■
