• H. Wiggins will be riding at the Maei, terton meeting next Saturday, where he . has been engaged to pilot Balloon, Autopay, Dainty Ways, Tcheka, General Gas ; and Veronese in their respective races. i i The local steeplechaser Marita is bowling along very freely in his work at > Ellerslie, in view of his engagements at [ the Waikato Hunt meeting. Marita, who has already been in the money this , season, looks all the better for his recent i racing. While his condition lasted Luxurious was racing close up with the leaders in the Hob3on Handicap at Ellerslie and his lengthy spell from racing has not affected his pace. He looks improved with the race and is putting more dash into his i track work and should be an improved ; horse the next time he is raced. On Ellerslie form High Pitch should give a good account of himself in the big handicap at the Waikato Hunt meeting. He is one of the best seasoned horses in the race, and the class is hardly as formidable as that which he has been competing against recently. Although Bizarro will not be racing at the Whangarei meeting there is nothing amiss with the Absurd gelding, who is still one of the regular workers at Ellerslie. He will probably be found competing in some of the high-weight handicaps later on in the season. Patere, who defeated a big field in the Waipa Plate last season, was expected to develop into a galloper above the ordinary, but unfortunately went amiss and was not raced afterwards. Evidently the son of Quin Abbey is training on satisfactorily, for he has been entered for the Bardowie Handicap, to be run at Cambridge on Labour Day. As the result of hie two good performances over hurdles at the Taranaki meeting last season, Royal Acre was regarded as likely to develop into a firstrate hurdler, but he subsequently failed to show the promise expected of him. He is down to contest a minor hurdle event at Waverley, and should show up in the moderate class engaged at that meeting. After several unsuccessful attempts over hurdles, Sir Archie is to be given another trial in flat races, which he will contest at the Whangarei meeting. As regards condition, Sir Archie has never looked better, while his track work has also been satisfactory, which makes his recent performances hard to account for. Keddar, who had his first race this season at the Wanganui meeting is engaged in the Grandstand Handicap at Masterton next Saturday. He is reported to be shaping satisfactorily in his training work at Awapuni and if he reproduces the form that he displayed last season good results can be expected, as the Arrows mith gelding is a brilliant galloper over sprint courses. With seven New Zealand Cup candidates included in the field to contest the Masterton Handicap, of one mile and a quarter), to be at Masterton next Saturday, the event will attract considerable attention from racegoers. Star Area, Piuthair, Spearmiss, Rabbi, Royal Game, Courageous, and Tcheka are the horses referred to, and recent form points to Piuthair as the likely one to collect'the stake. Last season Envoy was equal to winning his way out of hack company and wound up the season with three wins to his credit. He has not had a race this season, but is engaged in several events at the Whangarei meeting to be held next month. By Absurd, from Bronze, and now only in his fourth year, Envoy should be capable of adding to his record during . the current season.

Masher has a couple of wins to his credit this season. He accounted for the Putiki Handicap, one mile and 110 yards, at Wanganui, and was unlucky in the Moutoa Handicap, of a similar distance on the second day, in which he finished fourth. Masher, in his next outing, annexed the Glenaray Handicap, one mile, at the Hawke's Bay meeting with 8.0, and is due to make his reappearance at the Masterton fixture next Saturday. Hunting Boy, who figures in the Electric Handicap at Masterton on Saturday was a good two-year-old last season. He started on half a dozen occasions - for three wins and a third. He accounted for the Sapling Stakes, five •furlongs, at Woodville, the Cloverlea Handicap, five furlongs at Awapuni, and the Juvenile Handicap, five furlongs and a half, at Hastings, with 8.13, which was his last start. Hunting Boy is in the Electric Handicap, five furlongs and a half, &t Masterton oil Saturday with a i similar . impost. He ie trained by L. Ehapp, -at Awapuni. Dolomite, .who was among the horses brought over from Sydney by the Ulimarba' on Tuesday, is an English-bred horse by Pommern from Dolly Strong. He raced twice as a three-year-old without getting into the money. The following season he started on 13 occasions, scoring in a division of the Maiden Handicap, six furlongs, at Warwick Farm, and finishing third in the Granville Stakes, nine furlongs, at Rosehill and second in the Kogarah Stakes, one mile, at Rosehill. Last season Dolomite was third in the August Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Warwick Farm and was third in the Final Handicap one mile and.a quarter, at the AJC spring meeting. He later occupied' a similar position in the Farm Handicap one mile and a quarter, at the Warwick K arm T-^f? ting, Doloil "'te is engaged at the Wellington, Canterbury and Auckland meetings.

Piuthair has been accepted for in the Masterton Handicap at the Masterton meeting on Saturday, and she should go well. She won at Avondale, and though beaten at Ellerslie, should be suited by the smaller field. For a novice, the Hyllus—Gleaner gelding Operatic is displaying a fair amount of pace in his track work at Ellerslie. He is trained by K. Heaton, who has had some good performers in past years, and it would be very pleasing to see him again represented by a -winner. At the Waikato Hunt meeting last season Desert Glow finished second to Mint Leaf in the Members' Memorial Handicap with 8.3. He is engaged in the same event again at the approaching meeting in which he is handicapped at 7.13, and if back to his best form he would have to be considered. Autopay, wiio figures among the acceptors in the Nursery Handicap at Masterton on Saturday, is a two-year-old colt by Paper Money from Trebelli 11., an English mare by Thrush from Dramatica by St. Simon. He has not raced yet. Royal Opera showed 'jome speed at the Wellington winter meeting when he finished fourth in the Te Aro Handicap. Since then the son of Royal Stag has won two seven-furlong events at Dannevirke in August. He is engaged at the Masterton meeting on Saturday, and should go well. Roundelay finished second to Last Mark at the Wellington winter meeting, and he was thought on that showing to have a good chance at the Wanganui meeting last month, but foiled to get into the money. At the Hawke's Bay spring meeting he was a starter in the Hawke's Bay Guineas, but again failed. He is among those carded for the Maiden Stakes at M&sterton next Saturday, and has been galloping well at AwapunL Commendation is engaged at the Masterton meeting on Saturday, and is also entered for the Wellington fixture. Hihas not raced for some time, but he is reported to be going along all right in his work at Awapuni. Commendation only won one event last season, and that was the Grandstand Handicap at Masterton. He carried 10.13, and is in the same event on Saturday with 101b less. Full Mark has won three events on end. He annexed the Miki Miki Handicap, one mile, at the Masterton autumn meeting, and the Electric Handicap, six furlongs and 27 yards, at Marton, and the Wairoma Hack Handicap, of a similr.r distance at the ame meeting. He is accepted for in the Grandstand Handicap, seven furlongs, at Masterton next Saturday, and has recent form to commend him. By finishing second to Eager Rose in the Liverpool Handicap, at Ellerslie, Le Choucas must me given credit for a useful performance, and the race is likely to improve him. Le Choucae is engaged at the Whangarei meeting where he figures in the principal flat race on both days of that fixture. At the autumn meeting held at Whangarei last April, Le Choucas won the Mclnnes Memorial Handicap on the opening day, and ran second to Thursby in the Autumn Handican on the concluding day of the meeting. If paid up for in the Whangarei Cup at the approaching meeting, the Takanini-trained gelding is likely to command strong support from the public. In connection with the breeding ol King Conrad, who is given as by Nassau rom Killala, it appears that there are two mares named Killala, both by Kilbroney. One is from Arai-te-Uru, who remained in New Zealand, and is the dam of Letter of Credit and Co., while the other is from Gambode. The latter is the dam of King Conrad, who was bought as a yearlinp by G. Price- for 425g5. King Conrad, therefore, could not be called a New Zealand-bred horse, as described in the cablegram concerning the racing at Randwick on Saturday, for his sire and dam were -both owned in New South Wales when he waa got. The bestowal of similar names on two daughters of Kilbroney has lesl to the breeding of King Conrad being confused.
