CAUI FIELD MEETING. GUINEAS TO PENTHEUS. HIGH SYCE TAKES STAKES. MELBOURNE, October 13. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club's meeting opened at Caulfield yesterday in fine weather, and there was a large attendance. Silent Quest registered a sterling performance in the 1010 Welter Handicap. He was second to last at the five furlongs, but finished brilliantly. In the decision of the Debutante Stakes Kaftan was prominent throughout, and won narrowly. Green Wave finished fast, but was beaten. Kaftan was bred by her owner, Mr. Give Leonard, member of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club's committee. The rider, Dempsey. won previously on Sefton. Hi«h Syce was running third early in the Caulfield Stakes, but won comfortably in the closing stages. This is trainer Holt's sixth success in the race. W. Duncan, who steered High Syce, won previously 011 Royal Charter. In the decision of the Ringwood Steeplechase Night Lark led throughout. At the half mile post he had a lead of twenty lengths, but tired and was all out at the finish. Pentiums, who was prominent throughout, won the Caulfield Guineas comfortably. He is engaged in the Victoria Derby, Caulfield Cup, and Melbourne Cup. He arrived here from Sydney on Thursday.
