MR. H. L. BRITTAN.

FIRST BORN OF LYTTELTON.

Mr. Harry Lyttelton Brittan, who died at his home in Rahiri Road, Mount Eden,, last evening at the age of 77 years, was a son of William Guise Brittan, the first Commissioner of Lands for Canterbury, and well known as one of the founders of that province in which he landed from one of the first four ships that brought the Canterbury pilgrims in ISSI. Mr. Harry Brittan is believed to have been the first child born at Lyttelton—in March, 1852. Mrs. Brittan, who survives him, is a daughter of the late Rev. T. S. Grace, who, in the course of many years of missionary work among the Maoris of Auckland province, established the first Anglican Mission at Taupo, and later resided at Tauranga and Auckland. A brother of deceased is the Rev. F. G. Brittan, who is living in retirement after 50 years' service as classical master at Christ's College... A sister is Mrs. Canon Coates, of Christchurch.
