PUBLIC WORKS.

MINISTER ON TOUR

TE AWAMUTU DEPUTATION.

The Minister of Public Works (Hon, E. A. Ransom), received several deputations at Te Awamutu yesterday.

A deputation of settlers from the Kakepuku Riding asked for an increased subsidy on the £1-300 metalling loan in the special area, stating that theirs was the heaviest rated district in the whole Waipa County.

Wharepuhunga settlers supported the Minister's decision to erect a bridge over the Mangatutu Stream at Lothbridge's in preference to a more costly sz met tire ac "he present ford, on the main road to Xgaroma. A counter deputation, chiefly from Xgaroma, asked the Minister to delay action until he had personally inspected the district. Thev claimed that Lethbridge's site

entailed the metalling of several miies of road and would lengthen the journey to Te Awamutu and Otorohanga. The Minister said he was assured that the chosen site would be most useful.

A Pukeatua deputation asked the Minister to authorise the continuation of Maru Road, which would link up the Pukeatua and Roto-o-Rangi districts, thereby opening up 9000 acres of firstclass land very suitable for dairying.

Mr. Ransom said he would have investigations made into all the matters brought under his notice. He would do his very best to spend the available money advantageously and to promote settlement, especially where settlers were helping themselves.
