TROTTING.

CAMBRIDGE TROTS.

NATHANIEL'S BIG DIVIDEND. REREMAI WINS THE CUP. CARMEL THE FAST MILE. The annual fixture of the Cambridge Trotting Club on Saturday proved most, successful. The weather was excellent, the racing interesting, and the totalizator turnover amounted to £20.25S 10/, an increase of £830 10/ over the sum handled last year. The surprise of the afternoon went j down to the credit of Nathaniel, who carried only 3;5 tickets in the Hautapu Handicap, and his supporters handled a i dividend approaching the half-centurv. The Cup was an interesting race, the winner, Reremai, being in the lead over the last nine furlongs. The owner, Mr. .1. Simkin, wife the recipient of a very handsome gold cup. Backers Begin Well. Backers stepped off on the right foot when they selected Special Bell as the most likely to win the Introductory Trot. A. Julian succeeded in landing the stake with the favourite, but it was not an easy drive, and more than once the son of Gold Bell put in a skip. Nelson Girl led for six furlongs, when Sweet Memory took ther lead, and the grey mare looked a good thing just before reaching the straight. However, she broke up badly, 'and cave Special Bell the lead, and he came on to win by a length from Paradogm, who was finishing better than the winner. Sweet Memory settled down 1.0 o-et third, while of the others Wild Downs did best. Great Parrish Disappoints. The two-year-old Great Parrish was backed down to a very short price in the Leamington Handicap, but he settled his prospects by tangling badly at the start, losing many lengths. Even so, he was near "enough with six furlongs to go to win had he been solid, but he did not go smoothly, and at the finish was in fifth position" The winner turned up in the Whangarei owned and trained Moko Fly (C. Schon). The son of Peter Moko began very fast off the limit, and gave nothing a chance, leading all the wa,y to win by nearly three lengths from Single Mint, also at a good price. Tawa King was a fair third, and Zealous did best of the others after being slow away. Saddle Event. Hif>h Sea, the favourite in the saddle mile and a quarter, managed to get third, but was half a dozen lengths behind the winner, and he did not ptlt that dash into his finishing effort which has been characteristic of him at other times. Rockaway (Nightingale) stepped to the front going along the back stretch, and he wad not headed afterwards, having a margin of nearly a length over Hohoro at the finish. Both returned solid dividends. The others were a long way back. Reremai Comfortably. Peter Pirate wound up favourite in the Cup, Great Delight being second choice. Peter Pirate led for seven furlongs, but just as the second circuit was started Mitchell shoved Reremai up on the rails and hit the front. From this point the daughter of Our Thorpe was not headed. Derby Lynn ran into second place four furlongs from home, but though she battled on gamely she had no chance of netting to Reremai, who won by three fen"'ths. Peter Pirate was half a length away third. The placed horses were the only ones with a chance over the last half-mile. Hal Chimes was fourth and Concertina fifth. Beaten Again. The Great Parrish-My Thorpe bracket was made favourite in the Hautapu Handicap, but neither'got in the money. There was a big surprise in store, the little fancied Nathaniel (Turner) winning by half a length from Belle Axworthy, who went a fine race from 72yds behind. Carnui was third, and Lady Yvonne next. Jersey Thorpe was in front in the early stages, but faded out a long way from home, Great Parrish was never in the picture. Nathaniel returned a dividend getting on towards the half-century. A Good Sort. Akenehi (J. T. Paul) was a shade better than evens in the Bardowie Trot, and the grey daughter of Peter Moko just beat Sebisca by a head in a very fine finish. Te Ngutu led for a few furlongs, but then broke up, and with a round to go Akenehi and Battery Belie were the leaders. Then Akenehi drew clear, but six furlongs from home she left her feet and dropped back fourth. However, Paul got her going again, and showing a lot of speed she was in front with a quarter to go, with Sebisca trailing her. The pair fought out the finish, Akenehi winning by a head. Royal Bob was third, and but for breaking badly twice, he would have been a source of trouble to the winner. The others were well back, with Wild Nut at the head of them. An Improved Pacer. A. Julian drove his second winner during the day when he landed the Stewards' Handicap with the much-improved Great Ballin. From GOyds he gradually worked his way up to the limit horses, and was in the lead with three furlongs to go. He looked like having a comfortable win, but in the straight A. Adams threw out n. strong challenge with Zealous, and Julian had to driyc Great Ballin hard to win by half a head. Lord Haldane was not prominent in thp first mile, but lie was doing well in the straight, and was only three-quarters of a length away third. Dealer and Benefice followed. Dawdler, the favourite, only went a fair race, and was eighth at the finish. A Good Sprinter. Although Carmel failed to see out two miles in the Cup, he showed himself up as a smart sprinter in the Farewell Handicap. He ruled second choice in the betting, with Admiral Lock the favourite. Admiral Lock was soon out in front, but he was not allowed to get far away, and Child Audubon, Regret and Carmel were handy. Shaw took Carmel to the front approaching the straight, and he gave nothing a chance afterwards, and came home a comfortaide winner from Admiral Lock, with • loy Bird a moderate third. Joy Bird went a good race, seeing that she was handicapped on 00yds. Haerenga Pai tangled at the start and caused Rockaway to lose ground.
