OVERSEAS SHIPS BULK LARGE
A total of 756 vessels (of wliic-h 671 were local coastal) arrived in Auckland during March, giving 464,425 tons gross. Hie harbourmaster (Captain H. H. Sergeant) reported to the Harbour Board this afternoon tnat the figures showed an increase of 18 vessels, or 94,954 tons gross, compared with the figures for the same month last year. Captain Sergeant added that the March figures this year established a record for the port. Overseas vessels arriving numbered 37, with a tonnage of 294,278 gross, which exceeded any previous monthly record by six vessels, or 41,969 tons gross. The large coastal returns showed an increas* of 11 vessels, but the local coastal returns showed a decrease of 14 vessels. Reporting on the cash receipts for the month of March the treasurer (Mr. Chas. F. Garratt) stated that the ordinary revenue was £34.257, an "increase of £1556 upon the same month last year. The figures for six months to March 31 last showed an increase of £7396 when compared with the corresponding period of 1927-28. The main increases had been goods wharfage £4212, and shipping charges £1422.
